1. English Translation

Bilawal Mahala - 4 ( Har har Naam Sital Jal Dhiavoh )
O, Brother! I was dry like the irand poppy and without any fragrance but have attained the highest status of equipoise and bliss in the company of the holy saints, and by uniting with the Lord like chandan (sandal wood), I have become fragrant with the Lord's worship. You should also recite the Lord's True Name, which brings peace and tranquillity of mind. The True Master is like the fragrant sandal wood with the greatest aroma and one should inculcate the love of the Lord (praises) and the worship of the Lord in the heart. (1)

O, Brother! You should remember the Lord, who is the creator of the whole Universe and the Master of the whole world. The persons, who have sought the support of the Lord, have saved themselves from all the sufferings and afflictions of the world, but how? Similarly, the Lord had united Prahlad with Himself by emancipating him from his sufferings. (Pause-1)

Out of all the vegetation, weighing eighteen (weights) loads, where each load consists of the collection of one leaf from all the trees (of the world) but only the Chandan tree is the greatest of all, as all the trees except bamboo get the fragrance of (Chandan) sandalwood. Similarly, the saints are the highest and greatest in the world, as all the persons in the company of the holy saints are able to cross this ocean of life successfully. Faithless persons get separated from the Lord because of their egoism and are far removed from Him just as a dried tree cannot become green (blossomed with greenery). The faithless person, engrossed in the love of (Maya) worldly falsehood, has dried up like the dry trees and is without greenery or virtuous deeds, being devoid of virtues. (2)

The whole worldly drama (rules and procedures) has been enacted by the Lord Himself as such the Lord alone knows the modes of functioning of all the beings ( being omniscient). The persons, who join the company of the holy saints) Guru has become pure like gold, as whatever has been pre-destined for someone by the Lord, cannot be altered later on by anyone. (3)

O, Brother! The fountainhead of worship in the form of the holy saints is existing in this ocean of the world but men could gain the jewels and wealth of worldly detachment through the Guru's guidance only. By taking refuge at the lotus feet of the Guru I have also developed the urge and faith (in Him) and I never get satiated by singing the praises of the Lord. (4)

The Guru has directed me to have faith in the holy saints, who have recited the True Name of the Lord daily with detachment, and sing the praises of the Lord. Let us recite the True Name of the Lord every moment of life, but there is no limit) end to the virtues of the Lord, who is limitless and beyond our comprehension. (5)

All the religious books like Vedas, Shastras, and Puranas tell us that we should follow our religious duties and inculcate the love of six good actions (meditation, hoam, evening prayers, bath, worship of gods, and help of the poor). But the faithless persons suffer due to their whims and doubts. In fact, due to greed and other sins, they have drowned themselves with vicious (thinking) thoughts like a boat loaded with sins. (6)

O, Brother! Let us recite the True Name of the Lord as we could attain salvation only through True Name, as all the Smritis and Shastras also (talk of) mention and impress about True Name only. When this man gets rid of his egoism from his heart, he becomes pure and truthful and attains the highest state of equipoise and bliss by imbibing the love of True Name through the Guru's guidance. (7)

O, True Master! This world is comprising the four castes like Brahmin and Khatris, which is Your creation only and function according to your dictates as it pleases You. O Nanak! The human beings follow Your dictates as per Your Will and follow the tunes of Your music as it pleases You and function accordingly. All of them are under Your direction and control. (8-2-5)

बिलावलु महला ४ ॥
परमात्मा का नाम शीतल जल की तरह है, इसका ही चिंतन करो, प्रभु का नाम ही चंदन की सुन्दर सुगन्ध समान है, जो शरीर को सुगन्धित कर देता है।
संतों की संगति में मिलकर मैंने परमपद पा लिया है। जैसे एरण्ड एवं ढाक के वृक्ष चंदन की संगति करके चंदन बन जाते हैं, वैसे ही मैं भी हरि से मिलकर सुगन्धित हो गया हूँ॥ १ ॥

जगन्नाथ, जगदीश, गुसई का जाप करो,
जो उसकी शरण में आए हैं, उनका वैसे ही उद्धार हो गया है, जिस तरह भक्त प्रहलाद का उद्धार हो गया। १॥ रहाउ ॥
सारी वनस्पति में चंदन सर्वोत्तम है, चूंकि चंदन के निकट का प्रत्येक पेड़ चंदन बन गया है।
मायावी इतने झूठे हैं कि वे सूखे हुए खड़े पेड़ जैसे हैं, जिन पर चंदन (शुभ गुणों) का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता। उनके मन में अभिमान ही भरा हुआ है, जिससे वे प्रभु से बिछुड़ कर दूर हो गए हैं।॥ २॥

कर्ता परमेश्वर अपनी गति एवं विस्तार स्वयं ही जानता है।जगत्-रचना की सब विधियाँ अर्थात् नियम-विधान उसने स्वयं ही बनाए हैं।
जिसे सतगुरु मिल जाता है, वह गुणवान् बन जाता है। जो प्रारम्भ से ही भाग्य में लिखा होता है, उसे मिटाया नहीं सकता ॥ ३॥

गुरु के उपदेश से जीव नाम-रूपी रत्न-पदार्थ को पा लेता है। गुरु रूपी सागर भक्ति का भण्डार खुला हुआ है।
गुरु-चरणों में लगकर मन में श्रद्धा पैदा हो गई है और हरि गुणगान करते हुए मुझे तृप्ति नहीं हुई॥ ४॥

नित्य हरि का ध्यान करने से मन में बड़ा वैराग्य हो गया है और हरि का गुणानुवाद करते हुए अपनी निष्ठा को व्यक्त किया है।
यदि बार-बार, क्षण-क्षण, हर पल हरि का यश किया जाए तो भी उसका अन्त नहीं पाया जा सकता, क्योंकि हरि अपरम्पार है॥ ५ ॥

वेद, शास्त्र एवं पुराण सब जीवों को धर्म करने की सीख देते हैं और षट्कर्म ही दृढ़ करवाते हैं।
स्वेच्छाचारी जीव पाखण्ड एवं भ्रम में पड़कर ख्वार होते रहते हैं। उनकी जीवन-नैया पापों के भार के कारण लोभ की लहरों में डूब जाती है।॥ ६॥

स्मृतियों एवं शास्त्रों ने नाम ही दृढ़ करवाया है, इसलिए परमात्मा का नाम जपो और नाम जपकर गति पा लो।
यदि अभिमान दूर हो जाए तो मन निर्मल हो जाता है। जो गुरु-सान्निध्य में लीन रहता है, वह मोक्ष प्राप्त कर लेता है॥ ७॥

हे परमेश्वर ! यह जगत् तेरा ही रूप-रंग है, जैसे तू चाहता है, जीव वही कर्म करता है।
नानक का कथन है केि हे ईश्वर ! यह जीव तो तेरे वाजे हैं, जैसे तेरी इच्छा होती है, वैसे ही ये बजते हैं। जैसे तुझे उपयुक्त लगता है, वैसे ही राह पर चलते हैं।॥ ८ ॥ २॥ ५॥

ਬਿਲਾਵਲ ਚੌਥੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥
ਤੂੰ ਠੰਢੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਚੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਬੂ ਨਾਲ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮੁਅੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਸਤਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ, ਮੈਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਰਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਬੁਟਾ ਅਤੇ ਢੱਕ ਦਾ ਪੇੜ, ਮਿੱਠੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥
ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਆਲਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਅਤੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ॥
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹੀ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੱਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਬੰਦਖਲਾਸ ਹੋ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਠਹਿਰਾਉ ॥

ਸਾਰੀ ਬਨਾਸਪਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਨਣ ਦਾ ਬਿਰਛ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ॥ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਜੋ ਚੰਨਣ ਦੇ ਬਿਰਛ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ ਚੰਨਣ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਸੁਗੰਧਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਆਕੜ-ਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਖੁਸ਼ਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਗਰੂਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜ ਕੇ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਜਣੇ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਰਯਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੋਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਅਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੇਸਿਆ ਮੇਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥

ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਮੈਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਵਰਗੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਜਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਈਮਾਨ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਭੁੱਖ ਮਾਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥
ਸਦਾ, ਸਦਾ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਹਾਨ ਨਿਰਲੇਪਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਨਿਮਖ ਤੇ ਛਿਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਆਖ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਓੜਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥ ਉਹ ਪਰੇਡਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਪਰੇਡੇ ਹੈ ॥

ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ, ਵੇਦ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਚੰਗੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਛੇ ਕਰਮਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਕੂਕਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕੂਲ ਦੰਭੀ, ਸੰਦੇਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਰੇ ਬੋਝ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥
ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕੀਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਸੁੱਟੇ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਾ ਲਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਓਹ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਜ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਵਜਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
