1. Guru Har Rai Gurgaddi Divas 2025
We are celebrating the 381st Gurgaddi Gurpurab of Sri Guru Har Rai Ji, the 7th Sikh Guru who graced us with his divine presence. This day marks the anniversary of the day when Guru Har Rai Ji was passed the spiritual throne - Gurta-gaddi of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, succeeding his grandfather Guru Hargobind Ji in 1644.

2. Story of Gurgaddi Diwas - Guru Har Rai Ji
When Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji came to the end of his time and pondered in his mind about establishing the 'Seventh Guru' in his place on the throne, as it was a divine command. According to him, he considered his grandson Sri Harirai, skilled in all virtues, to be installed on the Gurta throne and deemed him to have passed all the tests. This conviction arose from the incident of the breaking of the flower; since that day, Sri Harirai had faithfully followed the order that the robe should never be opened, never wavering from it.
Guru Hargobind Sahib always took pleasure in observing how his orders were followed. However, at that time, three of the five Sahibzades were with him. Baba Gurditta Ji sacrificed his life in exchange for a deceased cow, while Baba Atal Rai Ji revived one of his playmates whom a snake had accidentally bitten. Following the Guru's command, Atal Rai had to give up his life in the playmate's place. Thus, out of the five, two Sahibzades ascended to Sachkhand.
The remaining three Suraj Mall Ji, Ani Rai, and Tegh Bahadur Ji were still in his company yet he began transferring the Gurta Gaddi to his grandson. Upon witnessing this, many people in the Sangat were greatly surprised that the sons were being passed over in favour of the grandson. However, Guru Ji acted entirely under the Hukum of Akal Purakh.
One day, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji arranged for a gathering around his seat and adorned it with a light canopy. He ordered that all the Masands and Sangat should attend the Diwan at this location. The message was dispatched to all the camps of Sikhs, and Sikhs like Rai Jodh, among others, sent messages to all the Sangat by name, informing them of Guru Ji's Durbar to be held that day, urging them to attend regardless of their wealth or status, to partake in the darshan. This message was relayed to all the camps of Sikhs and Masands around Kiratpur Sahib.
The white tent was very beautiful, its fringes embroidered with zaridar thread and tied with silk cord, were swinging in air. When all the preparations for the Diwan were done. Lights, garlands, canopies were put up and a beautiful arrangement was made. A Sikh came and told that all preparations have been made in the court for the congregation and himself to sit. Satguru ji immediately got up and walked to reach that place, taking with him Sri Har Rai ji, who has a tender body and a young age.

ਭਯੋ ਯਾਰ ਸੁਧ ਜਬੈ ਸੁਨਾਈ। ਉਠਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਮਨ ਕਰਯੋ ਤਿਸ ਥਾਈਂ।
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਸੰਗ ਨਿਜ ਲੀਨਿ। ਮ੍ਰਿਦੁਲ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੁ ਬੈਸ ਨਵੀਨ ॥੭॥
ਸੂਰਜ ਮਲ, ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ। ਕਰੇ ਹਕਾਰਨ ਤਿਹਠਾਂ ਸਾਦਰ।
ਅਣੀਰਾਇ ਜੁਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਏ। ਨਿਜ ਨਿਜ ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ ॥੮॥
ਰਾਇ ਜੋਧ ਤਬਿ ਚਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਯਹੁ । ਸੁਭਟ ਸਮੂਹਨਿ ਕੋ ਸੰਗ ਲ੍ਯਾਯੋ।
ਚਰਨ ਸਰੋਜਨਿ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਨਮੋ | ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਜੋ ਤਿਹ ਸਮੇਂ ॥੧੧॥

Other warriors, masands, chiefs of the town all had been called with respect. Diwan was filled with devotees on four corners. Rababis were ordered to sing Shabad Kirtan and The Bhats recited Kabitt etc.
ਤੀਨਹੁਂ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਠਾਏ ਤੀਰ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿਗੁਵਿੰਦ ਬਰ ਬੀਰ
ਪੈਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਨਾਲਿਯਰ ਏਕ। ਕਹਿ ਮੰਗਵਾਯੋ ਜਲਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੧੬॥
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਨੇ ਸਭਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੀ। ਪਯੋ ਦਾਸ, ਤ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਨੀ।
ਕੇਸਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਕੋ ਘਸਵਾਇ। ਕਲਗੀ ਜਿਗਾ ਲਈ ਮੰਗਵਾਇ ॥੧੭॥

Sangat was waiting on the Guru to see which son the Guru would give 'Gurgaddi' to. Some Sikhs thought that Gurta-gaddi would be passed to his grandson, and others thought it would be one of the three sons of Guru who were sitting in the same line alongside Har Rai Ji. The dilemma of the Sikhs ended when Satguru ji said, O Bhai Bhana, get up! Saying this, Satguru himself stood up and smiled with pure happiness seeing the face of grandson Sri Har Rai.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਖਾਨਾ। ‘ਉਠਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਅਬਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਨਾ'।
ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਆਪ ਉਠੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ। ਪੌਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਲੋਕਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਚੂਰੇ ॥੧੮॥

Thus, Satguru ji performed three circumambulations with five paise, coconuts in his hand and bowed down inn front of Har Rai. Meditated on the name of Guru Nanak, Guru Hargobind Sahib prayed that, We are starting to install your divine light in the seventh body.
ਤੀਨ ਪਦਛਨਾ ਫਿਰ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਿ। ਪੈਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਨਾਲਿਯਰ ਲੀਨਿ।
ਖਰੇ ਹੋਇ ਧਰਿ ਭੇਟ ਅਗਾਰੀ। ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦਨ ਧਾਰੀ॥੧੯॥
Then he told Bhai Bhana ji to give the Tilak of Gurta Gadi with his hands and do Namaskar assuming Har Rai to be my form. Following Guru Hargobind ji, Bhai Bhana ji bowed down to Guru Har Rai Sahib and placed the Tilak of Gurta Gaddi on his forehead. Then he ordered all the other Sangats to bow down to Guru Har Rai ji suggesting everyone not to doubt a bit in Guru Har Rai as there is no difference between him and his grandson.
ਪੁਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਨੇ ਕਿਯ ਟੀਕਾ। ਕੀਨਸਿ ਕੁਲ ਸੋਢੀ ਮਹਿ ਨੀਕਾ
ਪੁਨ ਸਭਿ ਸੋਂ ਗੁਰ ਕਹੀ ਸੁਨਾਇ। ‘ਮਮ ਸਮ ਅਬਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਹਰਿਰਾਇ॥੨੦॥

ਅਤਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਨਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਪਾਯੋ। ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਨੋ ਕੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਗਾਯੋ।
ਹਰੀ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਭਾਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ। ਕਰੋ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਤੁਮ ਦੇਰਿ ਨ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੬੧੭॥
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥ ਪੈਸੇ ਪਾਂਚ ਨਲੇਰ ਧਰਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੰਦਨ ਕੀਨ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਭਾਖ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਕੌ ਮਨ ਮੈਂ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੀਨ॥੬੧੮॥
ਚੌਪਈ ॥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਨੇ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਕਰਾਯੋ। ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਭਾਲਿ ਛਬਿ ਛਾਯੋ ।
ਉਮਰ ਬਰਖ ਦਸ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਇ। ਸੋਭਾ ਬਨੀ ਕਹੀ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੬੧੯॥

All this took place on Samvat 1695 Chetar Vadi Dasvi, but Bhai Kanh Singh Ji Nabha ( Mahan Kosh) has written 12 Chet, Chet Sudi 10th, Bikrami Samvat 1701 and CE 8 March 1644 as Gurta Gaddi day of Guru Har Rai Ji. When Guru ji was getting Tilak of Gurta Gaddi, all the Sikhs and Masands are rejoicing. In Gurpurab Darpan - Chet Vadi 13th, 29 Fagan 1700, 25 February 1644 Julian, 6 March New Day Sunday is recorded.
3. Value of Gurta-Gaddi Gurpurab of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji
Guru Har Rai Jee was born in the holy city of Kirtpur Sahib, where they spent their early years soaking in the teachings of Sikhism while getting to know the ways of the world. He was a highly spiritual individual with a remarkable bond to nature and its bestowals, and his deep love for everything in nature was clear in the way he led his life.
His father Guru Har Rai Ji kept the message of his ancestors alive and continued preaching love, equality, and peace to every kind of person. He supported the artists and arts, and he was the one who favoured the improvement of music, poetry, and any other creative works of art that had the same purpose with devotion.
Guru Har Rai Ji was also wise in medicine and curing of the diseased and suffering persons. He built hospitals and pharmacies to help the poor and weak and he gave money to whoever was in need. It was never an end to him. They saw in him humaneness and humility, the traits that they still revere and to which they turn for guidance even now.
Today is the most auspicious day of the birthday of Guru Har Rai and We are happy to express our gratitude of celebrating this day by remembering Guru Har Rai Sahib's teachings and trying to live like him. Let us bring in love and care for all, as we try to create a world that will have no room for discrimination and prejudice. Let us, therefore, recall Guru Har Rai Ji's verse, "May no one be suffering in vain, may no one lack food, may no one be left behind," and work together to make his thoughts a reality.
Short Biography of Guru Har Rai
Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji (1630-1661) (7th Nanak) were born at Kirtpur Sahib. Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji ascended the throne of Guru Nanak Dev Ji from their grandfather Guru Hargobind Ji in 1644.
He was the youngest son of Baba Gurdita Ji and Mata Nihal Kaur. (Baba Gurdita was the eldest son of Guru Hargobind Ji). He had an elder brother Dhir Mall.
Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji married at the age of 10 Mata Krishen Ji and had 2 Sons Baba Ram Rai and Guru Harkrishan Ji (1656-1664). They also adopted a daughter called Bibi Roop Kaur. On becoming the Sikhs 7th guru Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji were left with a vast array of soldiers horses and weapons. Even though his grandfather Guru Hargobind Ji (1595-1644) had fought 4 battles they insisted to their grandson that he should not engage in any warfare but continue the spiritual teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Guruji was a great environmentalist and set an example before us to preserve the earth. We should take his mission forward by planting a tree on all our special occasions. We wish you all a happy and healthy life on the Gurgaddi Divas Gurpurab of Guru Har Rai Ji.

ਕੱਢ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਬੂਆਂ ਵਾਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ,
ਚਰਨਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਖਿਲਾਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ ।
ਵੇਖ ਅਨਾਰ ਅਨਾਰ ਚਲਾਏ ।

ਚੜ੍ਹ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਆਯਾ ਹੁਸਨ ਸਵਾਇਆ ।
ਸੋਮੇ ਨੈਣ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਡਿੱਠੇ,
ਕੂਜ਼ੇ ਭਰ ਲਏ ਖੱਟੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ।
ਐਡੀ ਨੈਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਹੜ੍ਹ ਗਈ ।
ਅੰਬਰ ਵੇਲ ਰੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਈ ।
ਬਾਗ਼ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੇ ਰੱਬੀ ਮਾਲੀ,
ਵੇਂਹਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਡਾਲੀ ਡਾਲੀ ।
ਸਾਇਆ ਪੌਂਦੇ ਹਰ ਹਰ ਬੂਟੇ,
ਲੈਂਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਅਰਸ਼ੀ ਝੂਟੇ ।
ਜਪਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ।

ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਐਸਾ ਕਾਰਾ,
ਬੂਟਾ ਸੀ ਇਕ ਖੜਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ।
ਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਿਆ,
ਚੋਗ਼ਾ ਉਹਦੀ ਟਾਹਣੀ ਅੜਿਆ ।
ਕਲੀਆਂ ਨਿਉਂ ਨਿਉਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਗਈਆਂ ।
ਡਾਲੋਂ ਝੜੀਆਂ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪਈਆਂ ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਝੜੀਆਂ ਕਲੀਆਂ,
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਲਾਵੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਲੀਆਂ ।
ਧਰ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਚਾਈਆਂ,
ਨਾਲ ਹਿਰਖ ਦੇ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਪਾਈਆਂ ।
ਚੋਗ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਛ ਆਖ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ।
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਘਟਾਇਆ ।
ਹੋਠ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਖੋਲ੍ਹੇ,
ਕਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਐਦਾਂ ਬੋਲੇ:-
'ਐ ਕਲੀਓ ! ਕੁਛ ਗ਼ਮ ਨਾ ਖਾਓ,
ਦਿਲ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਗ਼ ਨਾ ਲਾਓ ।
ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਹੋਸਨ ਸੱਭੇ ਆਸਾਂ ।
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ 'ਫੂਲ' ਬਣਾਸਾਂ ।'
ਜੀਤ ਪਰਾਨੇ ਹੋਈ ਲੜਾਈ
ਬੀਤਯਾ ਵੇਲਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਵਿਹਾਣਾ,
ਹੋਇਆ ਐਸਾ ਰੱਬੀ ਭਾਣਾ ।
ਜੀਤ ਪਰਾਨੇ ਹੋਈ ਲੜਾਈ,
ਕਰਮ ਚੰਦ ਓਹ ਤੇਗ਼ ਚਲਾਈ ।
ਰਣ ਵਿਚ ਮੀਂਹ ਸਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸੇ ।
ਭੇਡਾਂ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਵੈਰੀ ਨੱਸੇ ।
ਐਪਰ ਹੋਣੀ ਹੁੰਦੜ ਆਈ,
ਕਰਮ ਚੰਦ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਪਾਈ ।
ਸੁਰਗਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ,
ਪਿੱਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਪੁੱਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ।
ਇਕ 'ਸੰਦਲੀ' ਇਕ 'ਫੂਲ' ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ।
ਇਕ ਸੂਰਜ ਇਕ ਚੰਦ ਪਿਆਰਾ ।
ਚਾਚੇ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ,
ਪਕੜ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਂਗਲੀ ਲਾਇਆ ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ,
ਆਣ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ।
ਰੋ ਰੋ ਨੀਰ ਵਗਾਵਣ ਲੱਗਾ ।
ਏਦਾਂ ਹਾਲ ਸੁਣਾਵਣ ਲੱਗਾ:-
"ਪਿਤਾ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਾਨ ਪਿਆਰੀ,
ਹੁਕਮ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਵਾਰੀ ।
ਇਹ ਕਲੀਆਂ ਹੁਣ ਝੜੀਆਂ ਪਈਆਂ,
ਗੁੱਛੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੜ ਗਈਆਂ ।
ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਵਾਲੀ ।
ਹੁਣ ਹੋ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਲੀ ।"
ਦੋਵੇਂ ਦੁੱਰ ਯਤੀਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ,
ਬੈਠੇ ਸਨ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ।
ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੂਰਤ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ,
ਸਹਿਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੂਰਤ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ।
ਕਲੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਚੁੱਪ ਚੁਪੀਤੇ ।
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗਲੇਡੂ ਪੀਤੇ ।
ਆਖਰ ਆਣ ਯਤੀਮੀ ਰੋਈ,
ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਂਭੜ ਹੋਈ ।
ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਦਾ ਪਾਕ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ,
ਆਇਆ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਠਾਠਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ,
ਮੌਜਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਖਸ਼ਸ਼ ਆਈ ।
ਰੁੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਬੰਨੇ ਲਾਈ ।
ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਪਰ ਉਪਕਾਰੀ,
ਠੋਡੀ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰੀ:-
"ਐ ਕਲੀਓ ! ਮੈਂ ਖ਼ੂਬ ਪਛਾਣਾਂ,
ਭੇਤ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਾਂ ।
ਗੁੱਛੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਝੜੀਓ ਕਲੀਂਓ !
ਵਕਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਫੜੀਓ ਕਲੀਓ !
ਅਰਸ਼ੀ ਕਲੀਓ ! ਉੱਠੋ ਜਾਓ,
ਜਗ ਉੱਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਬੂ ਖਿੰਡਾਓ ।
ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਲਾਓ,
ਤਾਜ ਹੰਢਾਓ ਰਾਜ ਕਮਾਓ ।
'ਸੰਦਲ' ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਹਰਦਮ ਮਹਿਕੋ ।
'ਫੂਲ' ਕਬੀਲਾ ਬਣਕੇ ਟਹਿਕੋ ।
ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਚੰਵਰ ਝੁਲਾਵੇ,
ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਹਾਵੇ ।
ਹਰ ਪਿੜ ਅੰਦਰ ਘੋੜਾ ਧਮਕੇ,
ਇਕਬਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਚਮਕੇ ।
ਪਤਝੜ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਆਖੇ ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੋਣ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਰਾਖੇ ।"
ਇਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦੀ ਬੇ ਪਰਵਾਹੀ,
ਉਹ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਰਸ਼ੀ ਮਾਹੀ ।
ਪੈਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਝੜੀਆਂ ਕਲੀਆਂ,
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਲਾਵੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਲੀਆਂ ।
ਮਾਨ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੱਈਆਂ ।
'ਸ਼ਰਫ' ਉਹੋ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਪਈਆਂ ।
