Eho Sohila Shabad Suhava; Shabdo Suhava Sada Sohila Satguru Sunaya Bani Sri Guru Amardas Ji - documented in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Ang 919 under Raga Ramkali. This is Pauri 16th of Anand Sahib, translation continuous up to Pauri 20th.

Eho Sohila Shabad Suhava Translation in English

The Guru's message, in the form of the Lord's praises, is really beautiful and is praiseworthy but is listened to and appreciated by that Guru-minded person only, who is blessed with this opportunity by the Guru Himself. But this message is realized and understood by those who are fortunate and pre-destined by Lord's Will. Some people are only interested in tall talk and waste their lives in talking only but no one has ever attained the Lord through talking only. O Nanak! The person, who is blessed with the Guru's Grace, listens to the Guru's Word from the Guru Himself and then enjoys the bliss of this guidance through the Guru's Word. (16)

The persons, who meditate on Lord's True Name, get purified by it. Even though such persons get purified but the really successful person is the one, who accepts the Guru's message and practices True Name in real life. Even their mother and father, all their associates, and who come in their contact through talking or listening to them, all get purified by practicing Lord's True Name and inculcating its love in their hearts. O Nanak! The persons, who have recited the True Name through the Guru's guidance, are purified with it. (17)

O Brother! No one can attain knowledge through formal practices like Yagna and one's doubts are not clarified without the enlightenment of the mind, nor one gets the stage of "Equipoise." All other formal actions do not help us remove our misgivings or dual-mindedness, though many people have tried many ways and mean for this purpose. Due to doubt and misgivings, our mind gets polluted so the question arises, how to purify the mind? O Brother! The mind could be purified by inculcating the Guru's message in one's heart and then reciting Lord's True Name. O Nanak! It is only through the Guru's Grace that one attains true knowledge and state of Equipoise then all the doubts are dispelled and one gets united with the Lord. (18)

Such persons, who are having a dirty mind within, though they appear very clean and pure from outer appearance, have really lost this game of life, even though they make an effort to appear very clean. They have developed the disorder of having an unending desire for more and more worldly possessions, as they always have a hunger for worldly desires, having forgotten about death. Such persons never care to listen to the nectar of True Name, which has been recommended by Vedas even, as the highest attainment of life and some learned persons sing the Lord's praises, which they have neglected and roam around as devils. O Nanak! Such faithless persons, who have given up Truth and have always followed false and unreal things of life, have lost this battle of life. (19)

The persons, who are pure and clean of heart and outer appearance as well, accept the Guru's teachings and then their actions are also good, as they never hear anything false, which does not reach their ears even. Their desires are also involved in truth and truthfulness. The persons, who have taken advantage of the jewel of True Name during this life and have inculcated True Name in their hearts, have really benefited from this life. They have dealt in the merchandise of True Name which has resulted in a good business of life, leading to a profitable deal. O Nanak! The persons, who have a pure mind always listen to the Guru's teachings in their hearts, which results in their company of the Guru constantly and thus they remember the Lord always. (20)

Hukamnama Meaning in Hindi

यह सुन्दर शब्द ही ईश्वर का कीर्तिगान है। सतगुरु ने सदा सुन्दर शब्द का कीर्तिगान सुनाया है। यह उनके ही मन में आकर बसा है, जिनके भाग्य में आदि से ही लिखा हुआ आया है। कुछ व्यक्ति भटकते रहते हैं और बहुत बातें करते हैं, किन्तु बातों से किसी ने भी प्राप्त नहीं किया। नानक कहते हैं कि सतगुरु ने शब्द का ही कीर्तिगान सुनाया है॥ १६ ॥

जिन्होंने परमात्मा का ध्यान किया है, वे पवित्र हो गए हैं। परमात्मा का ध्यान करके वही पवित्र हुए हैं, जिन्होंने गुरुमुख बनकर ध्यान-मनन किया है। वे अपने माता-पिता एवं परिवार सहित पवित्र हो गए हैं और उनकी संगति करने वाले भी पवित्र हो गए हैं। हरि-नाम को मुँह से जपने वाले एवं कानों से सुनने वाले पवित्र हो गए हैं और जिन्होंने मन में बसाया है, वे भी पवित्र पावन हो गए हैं। नानक कहते हैं कि जिन्होंने गुरुमुख बनकर ईश्वर का ध्यान किया है, वे पवित्र हो गए हैं॥ १७॥

धर्म-कर्म करने से मन में सहज ज्ञान उत्पन्न नहीं होता और सहज ज्ञान के बिना मन की चिंता दूर नहीं होती। यह चिंता किसी भी साधन से मन से दूर नहीं होती और अनेक लोग कर्मकाण्ड कर-करके थक गए हैं। यह अन्तर्मन संशय चिंता से मलिन हो गया है, इसे किस साधन द्वारा शुद्ध किया जाए। मन को शुद्ध करने के लिए शब्द से लगन लगाओ और परमात्मा के साथ चित लगाओ। नानक कहते हैं कि गुरु की कृपा से सहज-ज्ञान पैदा हो जाता है और इस प्रकार संशय-चिंता मन से दूर हो जाती है।॥ १८ ॥

कोई मन से मैला है, परन्तु बाहर से निर्मल होने का दिखावा करता है। जो बाहर से निर्मल होने का दिखावा करता है और मन से मैला होता है, उसने अपना जन्म जुए में हार दिया है। उसे तृष्णा का यह बहुत बड़ा रोग लगा हुआ है और उसने मृत्यु को अपने मन से भुला दिया है। वेदों में नाम को सर्वोत्तम बताया गया है परन्तु यह लोग उसे सुनते ही नहीं और प्रेतों की तरह भटकते रहते हैं। नानक कहते हैं कि जिन्होंने सत्य को त्याग कर झूठ से मोह लगा लिया है, उन्होंने अपना अमूल्य जन्म जुए में हार दिया है॥ १६॥

कुछ व्यक्ति दिल से भी निर्मल होते हैं और बाहर से भी निर्मल होते हैं। ऐसे दिल से एवं बाहर से निर्मल व्यक्ति सतगुरु के उपदेशानुसार शुभ करनी की कमाई करते हैं। उन्हें झूठ स्पर्श भी नहीं करता और उनका मन सत्य में ही विलीन रहता है। वही व्यापारी उत्तम हैं, जिन्होंने रत्न जैसा अमूल्य जन्म का लाभ हासिल कर लिया है। नानक कहते हैं कि जिनका मन निर्मल है, वे सदा ही गुरु के साथ रहते हैं।॥ २०॥

Punjabi Translation

ਇਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਨ ਹੈ ॥ ਇਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਇਹ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਈ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਬਕਵਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਸਾਈਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਈ ਹੈ ॥

ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਾਵਨ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਥੀ ਵੰਝਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਮੜੀ ਬਾਬਲ, ਟੱਬਰ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਸਣੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਪੀ ਭੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹਨ ॥ ਜੋ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਾਵਨ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਾਵਨ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਵਨ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਾਕ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥

ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਜਤਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥ ਲੋਕ ਰਸਮੀ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਰ ਹੁੱਟ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥ ਵਹਿਮ ਭਰਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਗੰਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਧੋ ਲੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੇ ॥

ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਗੰਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਵਾਰੋਂ ਸ਼ੁੰਧ ॥ ਜੋ ਬਾਹਰਵਾਰੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਪਲੀਤ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੂਏ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਲਚ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਰੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਚਿੰਮੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਭਲਾ ਦਿੱਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਮ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਵਸਤੂ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਭੂਤਨਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੰਮੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਜੂਏ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥

ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ॥ ਜੋ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਭੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨੇਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਕਨਸੋ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਜਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਸੱਚ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਖੱਟ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮ ਉੱਤਮ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹਨ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
