English Translation

Slok Mahala Pehla ( Bhae Vich Pawan Vahai Sadvao ... )

O Lord! The whole Universe is functioning under the spell of Your wonder-awe, (fear and love combined) just as the winds blow forever within the fear-complex and wonder of the Lord's existence. There are millions of rivers flowing all around the world with the same spirit of wonder and awe, while the fire is performing its multifarious jobs in the world under the same spirit of love and fear of the Lord and the Earth under the load of the whole Creation does not groan in the same spirit of love for the Lord. Even the god, Indra carries the heavy load of clouds on his head within the same spirit of fear and love of the Lord, while the god of justice, Dharam Raj, sitting at the gates of the Lord goes on dispensing justice to the individuals (based on their actions) in the same spirit of love and fear of the Lord (wonder-awe).

The sun and moon are covering crores of miles under the spell of the Lord's love and fear and there is no count of their travels or movements or even there is no end to the Lord's secrets, being beyond our comprehension. Even all the Siddhas, learned people, gods and followers of Gorakh Nath are all thrilled by the same wonder and awe of the Lord. The whole sky, looking like a spread out canopy is controlled by the same love of the Lord; there are great warriors, and some other brave people also, who function in the same spirit of love and awe (wonder) for the Lord; there are plenty of persons who are taken through the cycle of Rebirths and waste their lives in utter confusion. Faithless persons are prescribed certain fortune (luck) based on their actions in the world, including punishment. O Nanak! The Lord is formless, fearless, and free from egoistic tendencies and is ever existing in His wonderful Abode like a True Master. (1)

Mahala Pehla: O Nanak! The Lord alone is free from the fear- complex while many of His incarnations like Rama are like the dust of the holy feet of the Lord; there are plenty of stories describing the period and activities of Lord Krishna along with many learned people giving discourses on Vedas. There are many beggars dancing their way around in systematic rhythm, while there are many actors engaged in posing postures trying to please the audience with their performance. They pose as kings and queens and sing the Lord's praises along with some crude and base language not easily understood; they dress up as Kings and queens with costly costumes and carry out their theatrical performances.

O Nanak! The body, which wears such valuable costumes, mingles with dust after death. It is clear that no one can gain the Lord's knowledge by merely talking and it is rather difficult to describe the value of knowledge, (as hard as iron;)but with the Lord's Grace one might be able to unite with the Lord. It is only through love and devotion that one merges with the Lord, all other cleverness or administrative powers of issuing orders are futile. (2)

Pouri: We could unite with the Lord provided the Lord bestows His Grace on us, and we could attain the Guru's Grace. This man has assumed this human form after many ages of passing through the cycle of births and deaths in utter confusion and it is only through the Guru's Grace that he is being given the Guru's guidance and teachings now..

O Brother! Listen to me carefully; that there is no other benefactor, as great as the Guru and we could attain the True Lord only through the Guru's guidance and Grace. But this blessing is showered on those persons who have got rid of their egos. Then the Lord unites them with Himself and through them, many others learn about the Lord. (4)

पौड़ी ॥ नदर करहि जे आपणी ता नदरी सतिगुर पाया ॥ एहु जीओ बहुते जनम भरमिआ ता सतिगुर सबद सुणाया ॥ सतिगुर जेवड दाता को नही सभ सुणिअहु लोक सबाया ॥ सतिगुर मिलिऐ सच पाया जिन्ही विचहु आप गवाया ॥ जिन सचो सच बुझाया ॥४॥

Hukamnama meaning in Hindi

सलोक मः १ ॥ भै विचि पवणु वहै सदवाउ ॥ भै विचि चलहि लख दरीआउ ॥ भै विचि अगनि कढै वेगारि ॥ भै विचि धरती दबी भारि ॥
डर (भय) के कारण हवा निरंतर बहती रहती है। डर के कारण लाखों नदियाँ बहती हैं। डर के कारण आग बिना वेतन के जलती है। डर के कारण धरती अपने भारी बोझ के नीचे दबती है।

भै विचि इंदु फिरै सिर भारि ॥ भै विचि राजा धरम दुआरु ॥ भै विचि सूरजु भै विचि चंदु ॥ कोह करोड़ी चलत न अंतु ॥
डर के कारण चंद्रमा अपने सिर पर भार लेकर घूमता है। डर के कारण धर्म का द्वार (न्याय का राजा) खड़ा रहता है। डर के कारण सूर्य और चंद्रमा चलते हैं, उनके चलने का कोई अंत नहीं है।

भै विचि सिध बुध सुर नाथ ॥ भै विचि आडाणे आकास ॥ भै विचि जोध महाबल सूर ॥ भै विचि आवहि जावहि पूर ॥
डर के कारण सिद्ध, बुद्धिमान और देवताओं के स्वामी रहते हैं। डर के कारण आकाश (आकाशीय पिंड) बने रहते हैं। डर के कारण योद्धा और महान बलशाली सूर्य रहते हैं। डर के कारण ही पूर्णता से आते और जाते हैं।

सगलिआ भउ लिखिआ सिरि लेखु ॥ नानक निरभउ निरंकारु सचु एकु ॥१॥
सभी पर यह भय लिखा हुआ है। नानक कहते हैं, एक ही सत्य ईश्वर है जो निर्भय और निराकार है।

मः १ ॥ नानक निरभउ निरंकारु होरि केते राम रवाल ॥ केतीआ कंन्ह कहाणीआ केते बेद बीचार ॥
नानक कहते हैं, निर्भय और निराकार ईश्वर ही एक है, अन्य राम (ईश्वर के कई रूप) और उनके गुण कई हैं। कितनी ही कहानियाँ और कितने ही वेदों के विचार हैं।

केते नचहि मंगते गिड़ि मुड़ि पूरहि ताल ॥ बाजारी बाजार महि आइ कढहि बाजार ॥ गावहि राजे राणीआ बोलहि आल पताल ॥
कितने ही भिखारी नाचते हैं, अपनी गर्दन मोड़ते हैं और ताल पूरा करते हैं। बाजार में बाजार के बीच में आकर वे बाजार लगाते हैं। राजा और रानियाँ गाते हैं, और ऊँचे और नीच बोलते हैं।

लख टकिआ के मुंदड़े लख टकिआ के हार ॥ जितु तनि पाईअहि नानका से तन होवहि छार ॥
लाखों की कीमत के झुमके और लाखों की कीमत के हार। जिन तनाओं (शरीरों) पर ये पहने जाते हैं, नानक कहते हैं, वे तन राख हो जाते हैं।

गिआनु न गलीई ढूढीऐ कथना करड़ा सारु ॥ करमि मिलै ता पाईऐ होर हिकमति हुकमु खुआरु ॥२॥
ज्ञान बातों से नहीं ढूँढा जाता, यह कहना कठिन है। कर्म से मिलता है, तब पाया जाता है, अन्यथा अन्य बुद्धिमत्ता और प्रयास केवल समय बर्बाद करते हैं।

पउड़ी ॥ नदरि करहि जे आपणी ता नदरी सतिगुरु पाइआ ॥ एहु जीउ बहुते जनम भरमिआ ता सतिगुरि सबदु सुणाइआ ॥
जब ईश्वर अपनी दृष्टि कृपा की दृष्टि डालता है, तब सतगुरु की दृष्टि से प्राप्त होता है। यह जीव कई जन्मों से भटकता रहा है, तब सतगुरु ने उसे शब्द (ईश्वर का नाम) सुनाया।

सतिगुर जेवडु दाता को नही सभि सुणिअहु लोक सबाइआ ॥ सतिगुरि मिलिऐ सचु पाइआ जिन्ही विचहु आपु गवाइआ ॥
सतगुरु जैसा दाता कोई नहीं है, यह सभी लोक सुन लें। सतगुरु से मिलकर सच्चा पाया जाता है, जिन्होंने अपने भीतर के अहंकार को मिटा दिया है।

जिनि सचो सचु बुझाइआ ॥४॥
जिन्होंने सच्चे को सच्चा समझाया है।

इस शबद में गुरु नानक देव जी ने बताया है कि समस्त ब्रह्मांड और इसके तत्व ईश्वर के भय से चलते हैं। यह भय एक तरह का श्रद्धा और भक्ति का भाव है। सच्चे सतगुरु के मिलन से ही हमें सच्चा ज्ञान प्राप्त होता है और अहंकार मिटता है, जिससे हम ईश्वर के निकट पहुँच सकते हैं।

ਸਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥ ਉਸ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਵਰ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਹਵਾ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਔਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦਰਿਆ ਵਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਸੇਕ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੱਬੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਬੱਦਲ ਸਿਰ-ਪਰਨੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਯ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਜ ਹੈ ॥ ਸੂਰਜ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਨ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਯ ਅਧੀਨ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੀਲ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਦੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਜਾਗ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਖ, ਦੇਵਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨ ॥ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਦਾ ਫੈਲਾਓ ਭੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ ॥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਯੋਧੇ ਮਹਾਬਲੀ ਅਖਵਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ॥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਆਵਾ-ਗਮਨ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਕਰਮ ਭੋਗ ਕੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਭਯ ਹਰ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਪਰਾਲਬਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਵਾਂਝਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ ਆਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਰੂਪੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ, ਕੇਵਲ ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਾਮ ਵਰਗੇ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਉਹਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਧੂੜ ਵਾਗੂੰ ਹਨ ॥ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਸਾਖੀਆਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ, ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਣ ਵਾਲੇ ॥ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਾਗ ਦੀ ਸੁਰ ਪੂਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਬਹੁ-ਰੂਪੀਏ ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਵਿਖਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਹ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਤੇ ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਪਰਲੇ ਤੇ ਹੇਠਲੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ) ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਹ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਰੁਪਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਨ-ਕੁੰਡਲ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਬੀਚਾਰ, ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਲੋਹੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਹੈ ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦਾ ਪਾਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੋਰਸ ਤਦਬੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਮਰ (ਹੁਕਮ) ਨਿਰੇ ਪੁਰੇ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ॥

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਮਾਲਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰੇ, ਤਦ ਹੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਾਂ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰੀ, ਤਦ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਜਿੱਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਮੇਟ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
