English Translation

Vadhans Mahala - 4 Ghorian Ik Onkar Satgur Prasad ( Deh Dejan Ji Ram Upaya Ram )
"By the Grace of the Lord-Sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance."

O, Brother! The Lord has created this human body in the form of a (mare) horse, which is of a fast-moving beautiful breed. This human frame is really wonderful and praiseworthy, which has been gained due to our great good fortune (as predestined by Lord's Will and as a reward for our good deeds (in the past) and this body is more valuable than gold even.

The human being, when imbued with the love of the Lord, reciting Lord's True Name (worship), enjoys the (eternal) spiritual bliss. This human (frame) body has been made beautiful with the recitation of the True Name, as it is a beautiful, virtuous, and invaluable boon of the Lord, capable of reciting the True Name of the Lord. O, Nanak! This human body has been given to us due to our good fortune, which is supported by the Lord's True Name as its companion. The Lord alone has created this human body that gains all the support through the recitation of True Name. (1)

By placing a saddle on this horse we could cross this tortuous ocean (like a 'snake) of life and this is the secret of the Lord, worth (knowing) and realizing. (By controlling the mind, along with curbing our vicious thoughts we could cross this ocean through reciting True Name). It is only the Guru-minded persons, who could successfully cross this arduous and difficult path (ocean), full of waves of passion and worldly desires.

Such fortunate persons manage to board the ship of safety in the form of reciting the Lord's, True Name which has been provided by the captain of the ship (mariner) through the Guru's teachings. Then such Guru-minded persons sing the praises of the Lord by imbibing the love of the Lord (in their hearts), thus teaching the love of the Lord, being fully immersed in it. O, Nanak! Such Guru-minded persons attain the highest bliss of life by uniting with the Lord, free from all afflictions and sufferings, which is the highest stage in life. (2)

The knowledge (of the Lord) gained through the Guru's guidance, is like the bridle for controlling this horse (body), and the love of the Lord is like using the cane for the control of the horse. Thus the Guru-minded persons have controlled the mind by using the love of the Lord as a cane, thus making a success of this life by winning over (getting free from) the cycle of births and deaths.

This human being attains the Lord by charming (enamoring) this mind through the Guru's Word and partakes the nectar of True Name. Then by listening to the Guru's Word (Gurbani) with his ears, the human body (horse) is embellished with beautiful ornaments and other articles (of faith). O, Nanak! The Guru has thus helped this man to cross this arduous path, leading to the Yama's abode (god of death) which consists of difficult terrain and could be crossed successfully only with the Guru's guidance. (3)

O, Brother! This fast steed (of the human body) has been created by the Lord, which is praiseworthy as this is the only means of understanding and realizing the Lord's secrets. Blessed and praiseworthy is the human body which would enable us to merge or unite with the True Lord through self-realization, which has been bestowed by the Lord's Grace from the beginning itself.

Thus the Guru-minded persons, astride this (human body) horse cross this difficult terrain of the Yama successfully themselves and help many others as well to cross it, and finally merge with the Lord, the fountainhead of bliss. The perfect Guru has completed the marriage ceremony of the Sikh (follower) with the Lord-Spouse, along with the company of the holy saints, forming the marriage party. O, Nanak! We have attained unison with the Lord Spouse and enjoyed eternal bliss by singing the praises of the Lord in the company of the holy saints. (4-1-5)

( Deh Dejan Ji Ram Upaya Ram ) ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਘੋੜੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ) ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ) ਲੱਭੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਸੋਨੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਰੰਗ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਸਮਝ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਘੋੜੀ ਉਤੇ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ) ਕਾਠੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਉਸ ਕਾਠੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਉਤੇ) ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਔਖੇ (ਤਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਇਸ ਔਖੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਪੈ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ-ਮਲਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹ ਉੱਚਾ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।੨।

ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ (ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-ਘੋੜੀ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਲਗਾਮ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-ਘੋੜੀ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਚਾਬੁਕ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-ਘੋੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਬੁਕ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ, ਇਹ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਜਤ, ਧੀਰਜ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਕੁਠਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ) ਅੱਲ੍ਹੜ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਘੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-ਘੋੜੀ ਉਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) । ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ) ਬੜਾ ਔਖਾ ਪੈਂਡਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ-ਘੋੜੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਇਸ ਘੋੜੀ ਉਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਤੈ ਕਰੇ, ਸੋ) ਜਿਸ (ਸਰੀਰ-ਘੋੜੀ) ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ ਉੱਘੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ-ਘੋੜੀ ਉਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ, (ਇਹ ਘੋੜੀ) ਔਖੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ।

ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਰਚਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ (ਜਿਸ ਜਿੰਦ-ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਣ ਦਾ ਢੋ ਢੁਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ) , ਸਤ ਸੰਗੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਜੰਞ ਆ ਗਈ। ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ (ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਦੀਆਨੇ ਵੱਜ ਪਏ।੪।੧।੫।

वडहंसु महला ४ घोड़ीआ
ईश्वर एक है, जिसे सतगुरु की कृपा से पाया जा सकता है।

यह देह रूपी घोड़ी राम ने उत्पन्न की है। यह मनुष्य जीवन बड़ा घन्य है जो पुण्य कर्मों के फलस्वरूप प्राप्त हुआ है। यह मनुष्य जन्म बड़े पुण्य कर्म करने के फलस्वरूप ही मिला है और यह शरीर सोने की भाँति उत्तम है। गुरु के माध्यम से यह शरीर फूलों की भाँति गहरा रंग प्राप्त करता है और हरि-परमेश्वर के नवीन रंग में रंग जाता है। यह शरीर अति सुन्दर है जो हरि का जाप करता है और हरि-नाम से यह सुहावना हो गया है। अहोभाग्य से ही यह देह प्राप्त हुई है और परमेश्वर का नाम इसका साथी है। हे नानक ! इस शरीर की रचना राम ने की है॥ १॥

मैंने देह रूपी घोड़ी पर राम की अच्छी सूझ रूपी काठी डाली है। इस शरीर रूपी घोड़ी पर सवार होकर मैं विषम संसार-सागर से पार होता हूँ। विषम संसार सागर में असंख्य ही तरंगें हैं और गुरु के माध्यम से ही जीव इससे पार होते हैं। हरि रूपी जहाज पर सवार होकर भाग्यशाली पार हो जाते हैं और गुरु खेवट अपने शब्द से जीवों को पार कर देता है। हरि के प्रेम से रंगा हुआ हरि का प्रेमी रात-दिन हरि का गुणगान करता रहता है और हरि जैसा ही हो जाता है। नानक ने निर्वाण पद पा लिया है, दुनिया में हरिं सर्वोत्तम है और हरि पद ही भला है।॥ २॥

मुँह में लगाम के स्थान पर गुरु ने ज्ञान दृढ़ किया है। उसने प्रभु के प्रेम का चाबुक मेरे तन पर मारा है। प्रभु-प्रेम का चाबुक अपने तन पर मारकर गुरुमुख अपने मन को जीत कर जीवन-संग्राम में विजय प्राप्त कर लेता है। अपने बेकाबू मन को वह काबू करता है, शब्द को प्राप्त होता है और सजीव करने वाले हरि-रस का पान करता है। गुरु की उच्चरित की हुई वाणी को अपने कानों से सुनकर अपनी देह की घोड़ी को हरि-प्रेम का रंग चढ़ा दिया है। नानक ने मृत्यु का महामार्ग पथ पार कर लिया है।३॥

यह शरीर रूपी फुर्तीली घोड़ी राम ने उत्पन्न की है। यह शरीर रूपी घोड़ी धन्य-धन्य है, जिसके माध्यम से हरि-प्रभु की आराधना की जाती है। जिससे प्रभु का जाप किया जाता है, वह शरीर रूपी घोड़ी धन्य एवं सराहनीय है और यह पूर्व जन्म में किए गए शुभ कर्मों के संचय से ही प्राप्त होती है। जीव शरीर रूपी घोड़ी पर सवार होकर विषम संसार-सागर से पार हो जाता है और गुरु के माध्यम से परमानन्द प्रभु को मिल जाता है। पूर्ण परमेश्वर ने जीवात्मा का विवाह रचाया है और संतजनों की मिलकर बारात आई है। नानक का कथन है कि उसने हरि-परमेश्वर को वर के रूप में पा लिया है। संतजन मिलकर मंगल गीत गा रहे हैं और उसे शुभ-कामनाएँ दे रहे हैं।॥४॥१॥५॥
