Hukamnama Translation in English

Ramkali Mahalla Pehla (Vel Pinjaya Katt Vunaya)
The cotton is first passed through rollers, for ginning, then by spinning, the cotton is woven into cloth, then beaten, bleached, and steamed for washing (cleaning) it. The cloth is then cut by the scissors (of iron) and tom by the tailor (into small pieces) and then it is stitched with needle and thread (into different shapes of clothes).

O, Nanak! By singing the praises of the Master (Lord), the lost honor is restored if the human being leads a true life (with Lord's worship). When the cloth gets old and gets tattered, it could be patched up with the help of a needle and thread, but this old and patched up cloth hardly lasts for a short while and does not last for a month or even a fortnight. However, the truth never gets old, and once preserved (sewn) it never gets tattered or becomes (grows) old and worn out.

O, Nanak! The True Master is ever True, being Truth personified, and with the meditation, the Truth is embedded in the mind. (The soul and Prime-soul get merged like the cotton thread, by giving up the filth of the mind along with egoism and imbibing detachment, knowledge (of the Lord) and desire for salvation, the man ridding himself of all vices, gets merged with the Lord with the help of concentration of mind and love of heart like the thread and needle). (1.)

M - 1: The realization of the fact that the True Lord is pervading within all the beings, is like having the knife of Truth, (made of the steel of Truth) which has a beautiful and charming shape (workmanship) and has been sharpened with the sharpener (stone) of the Guru's Word (Guru's guidance) and is kept safe under the cover of (sheath of) virtuous deeds (actions or qualities).

O, sheik (Muslim Pir)! If the goat-like (being) mind is (killed) over-powered with such a knife, then you could see the blood of greed oozing out. O, Nanak! If the human being (soul) is subdued (killed) in such a manner, then he could merge with Truth (True Lord); and then gets immersed in (having) the glimpse of the True Lord. (2)

M-1: The human being is having a beautiful sword (tied) around the waist while riding a beautiful steed (with the human life as the horse) and the human being possesses the sword of knowledge and wisdom. O, Nanak! We should not get engrossed by egoism (while riding this horse of human life) lest we may fall down (while facing downwards) under a load of this egoism. (3)

Pour'i: The Guru-minded persons, who join the company of holy saints (holy congregations), get merged with the True Lord through the Guru's Word (guidance). The persons, who possess the treasure of the Lord's True Name, always recite the True Name of the Lord, thus getting united with Him. Such holy saints are acclaimed and honored (in the Lord's presence) who sing the praises of the Lord through the Guru's teachings (guidance), as they are imbued with the jewel of meditation and love of the Lord in the heart. Thus the Lord enables us to join the company of such holy saints and then bestows honor and prestige by merging us with Himself. (19)

श्लोक महला १॥ जैसे कपास को बेलकर रूई को कातकर कपड़ा बुना जाता है। फिर कपड़े को काट-फूट कर धोने के लिए भट्टी में डाल दिया जाता है। लोहे की कैंची कपड़े को काटती है और दर्जी उस कपड़े को फाड़ता है, फिर सूई और धागे से कपड़े को सिलाई कर दिया जाता है। हे नानक ! इसी प्रकार मनुष्य की खोई हुई इज्जत भगवान की स्तुति करने से हासिल हो जाती है और फिर वह शिष्ट जीवन बिताता है।

यदि कपड़ा पुराना होकर फट जाए तो सूई एवं धागे से उसे सिलाई कर लिया जाता है। यह सिलाई किया हुआ कपड़ा महीना या १५ दिन ही चलता है और घड़ी-मुहूर्त कुछ समय ही चलता है। सत्य कभी पुराना होता ही नहीं और यह एक बार सिलाई किया हुआ कभी फटता ही नहीं। हे नानक ! सच्चा परमेश्वर सदैव शाश्वत है, पर जीव को यह बात तब तक ही सत्य लगती है, जब तक वह नाम जपता रहता है॥ १॥

महला १॥ यदि सत्य की छुरी हो और सत्य ही उसका समूचा लोहा हो, तब इसकी बनावट बहुत ही सुन्दर होती है जब यह छुरी शब्द की सान पर रखकर तीक्ष्ण की गई हो और इसे गुणों की म्यान में डालकर रख दिया जाए । हे शेख ! यदि कोई जीव उस छुरी से मारा गया हो तो तू देख लेगा कि उस में लोभ रूपी लहू निकल गया है। जो जीव इस प्रकार हलाल हो जाता है, वह खुदा से जाकर जुड़ जाता है। हे नानक ! वह खुदा के द्वार पर उसके दर्शन में लीन हो जाता है॥ २॥

महला १॥ हे नानक ! जिस व्यक्ति ने अपनी कमर में सुन्दर कटार धारण की हुई है और कुशल घोड़े पर सवार है, उसे इस बात का अभिमान नहीं करना चाहिए, कहीं उसके सिर पर अभिमान करने से पापों का भार न आ पड़े॥ ३॥

पउड़ी॥ जो व्यक्ति गुरु के निर्देशानुसार चलते हैं, वही सत्संगति में शब्द-ब्रह्म में विलीन हो जाते हैं। वही सत्यवादी हैं, जो सत्य का ध्यान-मनन करते हैं और जिनके पास अन्तिम क्षणों में यात्रा व्यय के लिए हरि-नाम रूपी धन है। भक्तजन भगवान का गुणगान करते हुए बहुत सुन्दर लगते हैं और गुरु-मतानुसार अडिग रहते हैं। गुरु के शब्द द्वारा रत्न जैसे अमूल्य नाम का विचार उनके मन में निवास कर गया है। ईश्वर स्वयं ही गुरु से साक्षात्कार करवा कर अपने साथ मिला लेता है और स्वयं ही भक्तों को सम्मान देता है। १६॥

(ਰੂੰ ਵੇਲਣੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵੇਲ ਕੇ ਪਿੰਞਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਤ ਕੇ (ਕੱਪੜਾ) ਉਣਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਟੋਟੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਧੁਆਣ ਲਈ) ਖੁੰਬ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਕੈਂਚੀ ਕਤਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਦਰਜ਼ੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸਿਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਪਾੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੀਪ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਗੁਆਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਫਿਰ ਬਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕੱਪੜਾ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਾਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਢ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਗੰਢਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ) ਕੋਈ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਅੱਧਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਤੱਗਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਘੜੀ ਦੋ ਘੜੀ (ਥੋੜਾ ਚਿਰ) ਹੀ ਹੰਢਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਪਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੂਪ ਪਟੋਲਾ) ਕਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਸੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ) । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਖਸਮ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ।1।

ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਛੁਰੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਛੁਰੀ ਦਾ) ਸਾਰਾ ਲੋਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਛੁਰੀ ਦੀ ਘਾੜਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ; ਇਹ ਛੁਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸਾਣ ਤੇ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਜੇ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼ ਇਸ ਛੁਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੁੱਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ 'ਸ਼ੇਖ਼' ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਘੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ) ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਲੱਬ-ਰੂਪ ਲਹੂ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਕੁੱਠਾ ਜਾ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਅੱਪੜ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।2।

ਲੱਕ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਕਟਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਰ ਹੋਵੇ, (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੀਏ, (ਕੀਹ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ) ਮਤਾਂ ਸਿਰ-ਭਾਰ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਏ।3।

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਧਨ ਹੈ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਲਈ) ਖ਼ਰਚ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ।

(ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਭਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 19।
