English Translation

Tilang Mahala First ( Eaanadiye Maanada Kaaee Kareia )

O, ignorant man! Why are you so proud and full of egoistic tendencies? (like the foolish woman). Why do you not enjoy the bliss of His unison, when the Lord is abiding within you?

O, foolish human being! Your beloved Lord- Spouse is abiding close by (within you) whereas you are seeking Him outside (in the jungles) O, Man! Try to embellish and beautify yourself with the love of the Lord by putting the collyrium of His love and (fear) regard in your eyes.

O, Man! You will be considered to be the beloved of the Lord-Spouse and enjoy His unison only when He blesses you with His love like the wedded woman winning the conjugal love of her spouse. (1)

What could this foolish ignorant human being (like the foolish woman) do without winning the love and acceptance of the Lord Spouse? This foolish man, without the Grace of the Lord-Spouse, makes a lot of efforts in the form of magical rituals, to win the love and confidence of the Lord (like the woman trying many magical tricks) but cannot win His favors.

In fact, without virtuous deeds, man cannot gain anything useful (fruitful) despite his running around. This human being is always engrossed in worldly pleasures, being enamored by vices like greed for more (worldly) possessions, thus forgetting the Lord completely. This man foolishly tries to seek the Lord through worldly chores and pleasures, but the love of the Lord cannot be gained by getting engrossed in vices and worldly falsehood. (2)

O, Brother! If you were to ask the Guru-minded persons about the secret of their attainment of the Lord-Spouse, (like the wedded woman winning the love of her spouse) you would find that it is through following the Will of the Lord, leaving aside one's own' clever moves or cleverness, and functioning as per His Will Whatever the Lord does, should be accepted with pleasure, and we should inculcate the love of the Guru's lotus feet, which bestows the invaluable knowledge of the Lord's secrets.

We should follow the dictates of the Lord by surrendering completely (in body and mind) to the Lord's Will and the thinking to be molded with the fragrance (of the sandalwood) of the Guru's Word. The wedded woman (saintly person) has advised thus, "O, Sister! One could attain the Lord's Spouse only by functioning according to His Will" (3)

O, Brother! All your clever moves and wisdom will be of no avail, as the Lord-Spouse could be attained only by ridding! ourselves of our egoism and l-am-ness. Whenever the Lord perceives us with His benign glimpse through His Grace, we enjoy the best period of our life through His acceptance.

O, Nanak! Thus the human being (like the wedded woman) attains the Lord's True Name worth all the nine treasures of the world. Such a person, acceptable to the Lord-Spouse, wins· the pleasure and love of the Lord and becomes the king of kings. (like the faithful wedded woman becoming the leading queen, winning the love of the spouse).

So such Guru-minded persons, imbued with the love of the Lord, by reciting True Name, enjoy the bliss of life in the state of equipoise and appear beautiful and full of wisdom. They enjoy eternal bliss through the light of knowledge and worldly detachment. (with the eyes of knowledge and aloofness) ( 4-2-4)

ਹੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਇਤਨਾ ਕੋਝਾ ਮਾਣ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ? ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣਦੀ? ਹੇ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਏ! ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕ) ਬਾਹਰਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭਾਲਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ? (ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ (ਦੇ ਸੁਰਮੇ) ਦੀਆਂ ਸਲਾਈਆਂ ਪਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਹਾਰ-ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰ।

ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਾਗ ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਮਝੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰੇ।੧।

(ਪਰ) ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਗੇ? ਅਜੇਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਹੀ ਤਰਲੇ ਪਈ ਕਰੇ, ਉਹ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਹਲ-ਘਰ ਲੱਭ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। (ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿਤਨੀ ਹੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

ਜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਜੀਭ ਦੇ ਚਸਕੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹੇ, ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬੀ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨੀਂ ਗੱਲੀਂ ਖਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹੀ ਰਹੀ (ਜੋ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਸਮਝੇ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ) ।੨।

(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਬੇਸ਼ਕ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛ ਵੇਖੋ ਕਿ ਕਿਹਨੀਂ ਗੱਲੀਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਇਹੀ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਚਲਾਕੀ ਤੇ ਧੱਕਾ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਉ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ (ਸਿਰ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਮੰਨੋ, ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਨਾਮ-ਵਸਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਜੋੜੋ, ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਰੋ, ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰੋ, ਬੱਸ! ਇਹ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ (ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਵਰਤੋ। ਸੋਹਾਗ ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਇਹੀ ਆਖਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਇਹਨੀਂ ਗੱਲੀਂ ਹੀ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।

ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰੀਏ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਹੈ। (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਸਫਲ ਜਾਣੋ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਹਾਗ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕੇ, (ਜਿਸ) ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਵਲ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਾਨੋ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜਗਤ-) ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਅਕਲ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਕਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।੪।੨।੪।

Hukamnama: Hindi Meaning

तिलंग मः १ ॥ हे नादान जीव-स्त्री ! तू घमण्ड क्यों करती है ? तू अपने हृदय-घर में मौजूद हरि का प्रेम क्यों नहीं लेती ? हे बावली स्त्री ! तेरा पति-प्रभु तेरे पास ही है, तेरे हृदय में रहता है, तू उसे बाहर क्यों ढूंढती है ? अपने नयनों पर प्रभु के डर रूपी सुरमे की सिलाइयों डाल और प्रमु-प्रेम का श्रृंगार कर। यदि पति-प्रभु जीव-स्त्री से प्रेम धारण करेगा तो ही वह सुहागिन जानी जाएगी॥ १॥

नादान एवं नासमझ जीव-स्त्री क्या कर सकती है, यदि पतिप्रभु उसे पसंद ही न करे। ऐसी जीव-स्त्री कितने ही करुणा-प्रलाप करती है लेकिन पति-प्रभु की अनुकंपा के बिना उसका महल प्राप्त नहीं करती। यदि वह अधिकतर भागदौड़ भी करे तो भी भाग्य के बिना उसे कुछ भी प्राप्त नहीं होता। लालच,लोभ एवं अहंकार में मग्न हुई वह माया में ही समाई रहती है। जीव-स्त्री नासमझ ही बनी हुई है और उसे इन बातों से मालिक-प्रभु प्राप्त नहीं होता।॥ २॥

चाहे सुहागिन स्त्रियों से जाकर पूछ लो कि उन्होंने किन बातों से अपने पति-प्रभु को पाया है। जो कुछ प्रभु करता है, उसे भला समझ कर स्वीकार करो और अपनी चालाकी व हुक्म चलाना छोड़ दी। उस प्रभु के चरणों में चित्त लगाना चाहिए, जिसके प्रेम से मोक्ष पदार्थ मिलता है। जो प्रभु कहता है, वही कार्य करो। ऐसी सुगन्धि लगाओ कि अपना तन एवं मन अर्पण कर दो । हे बहन ! सुहागिन स्त्री इस तरह ही कहती है कि इन बातों से ही पति प्रभु मिलता है। ३॥

यदि अहंत्व को दूर कर दिया जाए तो ही पति प्रभु मिलता है, इसके अलावा कोई अन्य चतुराई व्यर्थ है। जब पति-प्रभु अपनी कृपा-दृष्टि करके देखता है तो जीव-स्त्री का वह दिन ही सफल है और वह नौ निधियों पा लेती है। हे नानक ! जो जीव-स्त्री अपने पति-प्रभु को प्यारी लगती है, वही सुहागिन है और वह सबमें शोभा प्राप्त करती है। जो प्रभु प्रेम में रंगी हुई है और सहजावस्था में रात दिन प्रभु-प्रेम में लीन रहती है, वही सुन्दर, रूपवान, विलक्षण स्वरूप वाली एवं चतुर कहलाती है॥ ४॥ २॥ ४॥
