Sri Gur Partap Suraj Parkash Granth PDF Download
Suraj Parkash is one of the biggest classical medieval sources of Sikh History. It was written by Churamani Kavi Santokh Singh who belonged to the Nirmala Sect of Sikhism. The language of the Granth is typical Braj of the time but was scripted in Gurmukhi. Due to the complexities of words, no ordinary person could ever understand them fully until Bhai Vir Singh brought the 14-volume annotated edition of Suraj Parkash, published during 1927-35 with Punjabi footnotes.

Bhai Santokh Singh (1787-1843) was a poet and historian who wrote 6 Granths including Guru Nanak Parkash and Balmik Ramayan. But he is best known for his magnum opus Suraj Parkash. Suraj Parkash means "Light of the Sun" as it describes the life journey, teachings, and philosophy of all the 10 Gurus with such detail - no other Granth has ever could. Another name we use for this Granth is "Sri Gur Partap Suraj".
Sri Gur Partap Suraj Parkash can be divided into 3 Sections and 22 Volumes as shown below:
1. Sri Nanak Parkash - 2 Volumes
2. Raas - 12 Volumes according to the twelve signs of the zodiac
3. Rut & Ayans - 6 Volumes according to the six seasons (Rutt) of the Indian subcontinent - 2 Volumes of Ayans (Ascending and Descending)
Bhai Sahib Sri Baljinder Singh Ji (Rara Sahib Wale) put his time, sources, and effort to digitize this beautiful Granth in digital format and made Suraj Parkash PDF available within the reach of common users, scholars, and students engaged in the study of Sikh History and Philosophy.
1. The authenticity of Suraj Parkash Granth
There is nothing undisputable in religions so is the case with Suraj Parkash. It is said that Bhai Santokh Singh had access to Bhai Sahib Singh who wrote Sau Sakhi or 500 Sakhi under the guidance of Bhai Ram Kuir aka Gurabakhs Singh Ji but this relation cannot be proved. As it is in Braj Bhasha, has complex Sanskrit Words in it, Favoring the Vedantic philosophy of Udasis and Nirmalas; Many modern scholars don't find it suitable to call it an authentic source of Sikh history.
A renowned Sikh historian from Newzealand W. H. McLeod said about Suraj Parkash that it has a "somewhat higher proportion" of Sikh history, but it is mostly ahistorical mythology and an untrustworthy source of Sikh history. Another person on the internet said, "Sooner we ignore all the writings based on Suraj Parkash and Bhai Vir Singh's writings Sikhi would come on its own."
Even Bhai Kahn Singh Ji Nabha's commentary on this Granth goes like this:
"Bhai Sahib (Santokh Singh) had full faith and love in Gurbani, but by the company and inspiration of the Pandits that if you write the story of the Gurus as incarnations according to the mythology and not against the puranic scriptures, then they should be very popular and all Will be read with respect, Here Bhai Sahib made some severe mistakes"
2. What is our opinion on Suraj Parkash?
Most of the newly educated so-called Jaagrit scholars are insisting that these texts written in medieval style should be completely ignored. But by doing so, nothing positive can be achieved. e.g. Even if most of the stories in Ramayana seems like myth to us, they still cover stories of values. If you don't believe in Chamatkar, you would have rejected the idea of leaving earth on a space shuttle back in the 1950s. There are things beyond Science today, that will eventually come true in the coming years and will merge into Science. So you can't pronounce a Traditional Parcharak - a pseudo-scientist all the time.
The Guru Granth Sahib is our Spiritual Guru, he does not teach us history but tells us the true path of knowledge that ultimately leads a Sikh to bliss. We will always need all the other texts to discuss our history, whether it is the Dasam Granth, the Suraj Parkash, or Prachin Panth Parkash. According to our discretion, we are able to separate the false talk from the real one and can learn good things that stand on the principle of Guru Granth Sahib.
