Hukamnama Translation in English

Sloka Mahalla I
[ Sach Kaal Koorh Vartia ... ]
There is dearth of truth, falsehood is rife.
The falsehood of Kaliyuga has turned people into louts.
Since the kernel from the seed is removed,
How will it sprout?
It would have been different had it been unsplit and the season suitable.
Says Nanak, without the proper ground,
The plain cloth doesn't take dye of the chemical.
In the vat of God's fear the mind should be steamed,
And the leaven of modesty applied.
Says Nanak, no shade of falsehood would remain,
Should the mind in devotion be dyed. (I)

Mahalla I

Greed and evil are the king and counselor,
Falsehood is their treasurer.
Lust is the aide available for advice.
They get together to confer and conjure.
Their subjects are purblind and unenlightened,
Straw-stuffed carcases they appear.
The enlightened dance, play on instruments
And deck themselves in many a figure.
They sing ballads of battles
And the heroic deeds of their peers.
The stupid scholars who relish arguments,
This is what they amass and endear.
A man of God wastes his life lived in dharma
Asking for liberation, a reward and fare.
He calls himself a celibate but knows not the way,
From family and home himself would tear.
None does make a modest claim,
Everyone considers himself great.
Says Nanak, had he been weighed against his merit,
He would be recognised of adequate weight. (2)

Mahalla I

Says Nanak, what the Lord wills must happen,
The True keeps a watch.
Everyone makes an endeavour,
What the Creator wishes comes to pass.
Caste and prowess have no consideration hereafter,
A different set of values they toss.
Those who are reckoned respectable there,
They are honourable in the eyes of the Boss. (3)

Pauri

Those who have been bestowed by You Above,
They take to meditation.
Man can do not much,
Your universe is of utmost variation.
There are some You united in Your grace,
Others are left in desolation.
It is with Guru's grace that one realises You.
Those whom You accord imagination,
They merge in truth on their own for its fascination. (11)

श्लोक महला १॥ अब सत्य का अकाल पड़ गया है अर्थात् सत्य लुप्त हो गया है एवं झूठ का प्रसार प्रचलित है, इस कलियुग की कालिख ने लोगों को बेताल बना दिया है। जिन्होंने प्रभु-नाम का बीज बोया था वह मान-प्रतिष्ठा से (जगत से) गए हैं, परन्तु अब टूटा हुआ (नाम का) बीज कैसे अंकुरित हो सकता है ? यदि बीज सम्पूर्ण हो और ऋतु भी सुहावनी हो तो यह अंकुरित हो सकता है। हे नानक ! यदि लाग का प्रयोग न किया जाए तो नवीन वस्त्र रंगा नहीं जा सकता। यदि शरीर पर लज्जा की लाग लगा दी जाए तो यह प्रभु के भय में पापों से धुलकर उज्ज्वल हो जाती है। हे नानक ! यदि मनुष्य प्रभु-भक्ति से रंगा जाए तो झूठ इसे निकट भी स्पर्श नहीं कर सकता ॥ १॥

महला १॥ लोभ एवं पाप दोनों ही राजा तथा मंत्री हैं और झूठ चौधरी बना बैठा है। लोग बैठ कर बुरे दांव पेच सोचते हैं। अन्धी प्रजा ज्ञान से विहीन है और मृतक की भाँति चुपचाप अन्याय सहती है। ज्ञानी नृत्य करते हैं, बाजे बजाते और अनेक प्रकार के रूप धारण करके श्रृंगार करते हैं। वे ऊँची आवाज़ में पुकारते हैं एवं युद्ध काव्य एवं शूरवीरों की शूरवीरता की कहानियाँ गाते हैं। मूर्ख पण्डित अपनी चतुराई एवं हुज्जत द्वारा धन-संग्रह करता है, उसका केवल धन से ही प्रेम है। धर्मी लोग धर्म का कर्म करते हैं और मोक्ष की माँग करते हैं। परन्तु उसके प्रभाव से वंचित हो जाते हैं क्योंकि स्वार्थवश वो यती कहलवाने वाले जीवन की युक्ति को नहीं समझते और व्यर्थ ही घर-बार छोड़ देते है। सभी अपने आप को पूर्ण भक्त साबित करते है कोई स्वयं को कम नहीं समझता हे नानक ! यदि इज्जत का तराजू पिछले पलड़े में डाल दिया जाए तो ही मनुष्य भलीभांति तुला हुआ मालूम होता है॥ २॥

महला १॥ हे नानक ! बुराई भली प्रकार उजागर हो जाती है क्योंकि वह सत्य-परमशेवर सब कुछ देखता है। हरेक ने जगत में आगे बढ़ने हेतु छलांग लगाई है परन्तु जो कुछ जगत का रचयिता करता है, वही होता है। परलोक में जाति एवं बाहुबल का कोई मूल्य नहीं क्योंकि वहाँ तो जीव नवीन होते हैं। जिन्हें कर्मो का लेखा-जोखा होने पर सम्मान प्राप्त होता है, वही भले कहे जा सकते हैं। ३ ॥

पौड़ी॥ हे विधाता ! तूने आरम्भ से ही जिन जीवों का अच्छा भाग्य लिख दिया है तो ही उन्होंने अपने मालिक-प्रभु को याद किया है। इन जीवों के वश में कुछ भी नहीं, यह विभिन्न प्रकार का जगत तूने ही उत्पन्न किया है। हे प्रभु ! कुछ जीवों को तू अपने साथ मिला लेता है और कुछ जीवों को स्वयं ही दूर करके ख्वार करता रहता है। जहाँ तूने खुद ही किसी को अपनी सूझ प्रदान की है, गुरु की कृपा से उसने ही तुझे जाना है और वह सहज ही सत्य में समा गया है॥ ११॥

[ Sach Kaal Koorh Vartia ... ] (ਸੰਸਾਰਕ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਸੱਚ ਉੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੜ ਹੀ ਕੂੜ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕਲਜੁਗ ਦੀ (ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕਾਲਖ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵ ਭੂਤਨੇ ਬਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪਰਬਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਣਹਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾਣ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਨੋ ਭੂਤਨੇ ਹਨ) । ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਬੀਜ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਬੀਜਿਆ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਗਏ। ਪਰ ਹੁਣ (ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਅੰਕੁਰ ਫੁਟਣੋਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਨ) ਦਾਲ ਵਾਂਗ (ਦੋ-ਫਾੜ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਭਾਵ ਦੁਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ) । ਬੀਜ ਉੱਗਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਬੀਜ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਬੀਜਣ ਦੀ ਰੁਤ ਵੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਫਬਵੀਂ ਹੋਵੇ, (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਕੁਰ ਭੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਫੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮਨ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਵਲ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਭੀ ਖੁੰਝਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਏ) ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਲਾਗ ਨ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਰੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪੱਕਾ) ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ (ਜੋ ਲਾਗ ਵਰਤਿਆਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇ ਇਸ ਕੋਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੰਗ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਰੂਪ ਖੁੰਬ ਤੇ ਧਰੀਏ; ਫੇਰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਤੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਦੀ ਪਾਹ ਦੇਈਏ। (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ (ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ-ਛਲ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੁਹ ਸਕਦਾ।1।
