1 Hukamnama Translation in English

O, Brother! ( Re Jan Uthaarai Dabioho ) You have spent your whole life sleeping in the slumber of ignorance and inactivity, being engrossed in the love of (Maya) worldly falsehood, (just as someone gets frightened while sleeping with his hand on the chest) without reciting True Name (even for a moment); neither you have awakened from the slumber of (love of) the worldly falsehood and ignorance through the Guru's Word, nor you have got the urge and thrill of the recitation of Lord's True Name (of the Lord's worship).

The body, which is not used in the service of the Guru or such other virtuous functions, deserves to be burnt. (in the fire of separation) I have seen this whole world burning in the fire of worldly desires and engrossed in egoism, worldly attachments, and dual-mindedness. O, Nanak! The Guruminded persons, who have recited the True Name through the Guru's Word, have saved themselves (from this fire) by seeking refuge at the lotus-feet of the Guru. (1)

Mahala 3rd:

The Sikh, who gets rid of his egoism and 'l-amness', being imbued with the love of the Guru's Word, deserves all praise and status in this world (like the woman who develops a love of her spouse). The beauty and other embellishments of the person, who follows the Lord's Wil1 (like the woman who obeys her spouse) are all worthwhile, as such a person enjoys the conjugal bliss of the Lord's unison having gained the love of the Lord-spouse. Such a Sikh enjoys immortality as his Lordspouse is ever-existent and never suffers the pangs of separation from the Lord-Spouse. (like the woman enjoying the conjugal love of her spouse all the time). O, Nanak! Such a Sikh is united by the Lord with Himself as he becomes closer to the Lord by imbibing the love of the Guru. (2)

Pouri: The person, who is engaged in the slander (vilification) of the Guru, is a great evil-doer. O, Lord! May I never meet such persons, who are great sinners, nay murderers! They are roaming around and visiting various people with an evil minds just like a woman of bad character (ill-reputed) and with disgrace. However, the Guru-minded persons, who are fortunate enough to join the company of holy saints and serve the Lord, always lead a fruitful life of success. O, Lord! May be enabled to unite with the True Guru through Your Grace! I would offer myself as a sacrifice to such a Guru, who would enable me to unite with the Lord. (23)

सलोकु मः ३ ॥ रे जन उथारै दबिओहु सुतिआ गई विहाइ ॥ सतिगुर का सबद सुण न जागिओ अंतर न उपजिओ चाउ ॥ सरीर जलउ गुण बाहरा जो गुर कार न कमाइ ॥ जगत जलंदा डिठ मै हउमै दूजै भाइ ॥ नानक गुर सरणाई उबरे सच मन सबद धिआइ ॥१॥ मः ३ ॥ सबद रते हउमै गई सोभावंती नार ॥ पिर कै भाणै सदा चलै ता बनिआ सीगार ॥ सेज सुहावी सदा पिर रावै हर वर पाइआ नार ॥ ना हर मरै न कदे दुख लागै सदा सुहागण नार ॥ नानक हर प्रभ मेल लई गुर कै हेत पिआर ॥२॥ पउड़ी ॥ जिना गुर गोपिआ आपणा ते नर बुरिआरी ॥ हर जीउ तिन का दरसन ना करहु पापिसट हतिआरी ॥ ओहि घर घर फिरह कुसुध मन जिउ धरकट नारी ॥ वडभागी संगत मिले गुरमुख सवारी ॥

श्लोक महला ३॥ हे मानव ! भयानक स्वप्न के दबाव के नीचे तेरा सारा जीवन निद्रा में सोते हुए ही व्यतीत हो गया है। तुम तो गुरु का शब्द सुनकर भी जाग्रत नहीं हुए और न ही तुम्हारे मन में चाव पैदा हुआ है। वह शरीर जो गुणों से खाली है और जो गुरु की सेवा भी नहीं करता, उसे जल जाना ही चाहिए। मैंने तो इस दुनिया को आत्माभिमान एवं द्वैतभाव में जलते हुए ही देखा है। हे नानक ! जिन्होंने गुरु की शरण में आकर सच्चे मन से शब्द का चिंतन किया है, उनका कल्याण हो गया है॥ १॥

महला ३ ॥ शब्द में मग्न होने से जीव-स्त्री का अहंकार नष्ट हो गया है और अब वह शोभावान हो गई है। यदि जीव-स्त्री सदैव अपने प्रभु की आज्ञा का पालन करे तो ही उसका श्रृंगार उत्तम है। उस नारी की सेज सुहावनी हो जाती है, वह परमात्मा को ही अपने वर के रूप में प्राप्त कर लेती है और हमेशा ही अपने प्रियतम के साथ आनंद करती है। परमेश्वर तो अनश्वर है, जिसके कारण जीव रूपी नारी को कभी दुःख स्पर्श नहीं करता और वह तो सदा सुहागिन ही रहती है। हे नानक ! गुरु के स्नेह एवं प्रेम के कारण प्रभु उसे अपने साथ ही मिला लेता है॥२॥

पउड़ी ॥ जिन्होंने अपने गुरु का तिरस्कार किया है, वे पुरुष बहुत बुरे हैं। हे ईश्वर ! हमें तो उनके दर्शन मत करवाना, चूंकि वे तो महापापी और हत्यारे हैं। वे खोटे मन वाले व्यभिचारिणी नारी की तरह घर-घर फिरते रहते हैं। लेकिन अहोभाग्य से ही वे सत्संगति में शामिल होते है और गुरु के सान्निध्य में उनका जीवन संवर जाता है।

(ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ) ਉਥਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਦੱਬੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਸੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਗਈ ਹੈ; ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਾਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦਾ) ਚਾਉ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੜ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ) ਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ; (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦਾ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਨ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜੀਵ-ਰੂਪੀ) ਨਾਰੀ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਹੈ; ਉਹ ਨਾਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਸਫਲ ਸਮਝੋ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਰੂਪ) ਸੇਜ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੈੜੇ ਹਨ, ਰੱਬ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੀ ਕਰੇ! ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੋ, ਉਹ ਬੜੇ ਪਾਪੀ ਤੇ ਹੱਤਿਆਰੇ ਹਨ; ਮਨੋਂ ਖੋਟੇ ਉਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਵਿਭਚਾਰਨ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਨਿਵਾਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ, ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾ ॥੨੩
