ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ
English Translation
(Man Maile Sabh Kichh Maila... )
Vadhans Mahala Teeja Ghar Pehla Ik Oankar Satgur Prasad.
"By the Grace of the One Lord-Supreme, attainable through the Guru's guidance."
O, Brother! With the impure and filthy mind, everything else is dirty (impure) as by washing the body alone, the mind cannot be purified. The whole world is lost in whims and fancies, but hardly any (wise and fortunate) person realizes this fact. (1)
O, My Mind! Let us recite only Lord's True Name, as the Guru has blessed us with this treasure of True Name. (Pause-1) The filth of the mind is not cast away, including the dirt of egoism by practicing various Yogic exercises or Siddhas' rituals for controlling the senses, including meditation in complete silence or giving alms. (2)
In fact, without the Guru's guidance and support of the True Guru, there is no other mode of action to curb this wandering mind. It is not possible to relate the state of those persons, who have been diverted from the path of sinful actions towards virtuous deeds through the Guru's guidance. (3)
O, Nanak! The person, who gives up his egoism leads a life of humility in the company of the True Guru, (like a dead person) while some Guru-minded persons lead a fruitful life through the Guru's Word. The mind then gets purified by getting rid of the filth of worldly love and its attachments. (4-1)

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। ਇਹ (ਨਾਮ-) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਸਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ, ਜੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ (ਆਸਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਦੀ) ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਤਨ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।੩।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਫਿਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੧।

वडहंसु महला ३ घरु १ ईश्वर एक है, जिसे सतगुरु की कृपा से पाया जा सकता है। यदि जीव का मन मैला है तो सबकुछ मलिन है; शरीर को धोकर शुद्ध करने से मन निर्मल नहीं होता। यह दुनिया भ्रम में भूली हुई है किन्तु कोई विरला ही इस सत्य को बूझता है॥ १॥
हे मेरे मन ! तू एक परमेश्वर के नाम का जाप कर, चूंकि सतिगुरु ने मुझे यही नाम-भण्डार दिया है॥ १॥ रहाउ॥ यदि प्राणी सिद्ध महापुरुषों के आसन लगाना सीख ले तथा अपनी इन्द्रियों को काबू रखने का अभ्यास करे तो भी मन की मैल दूर नहीं होती और न ही उसकी अहंकार रूपी मलिनता निवृत्त होती है॥ २॥
सच्चे गुरु की शरण के बिना इस मन को किसी अन्य साधन द्वारा पावन नहीं किया जा सकता। सतिगुरु से भेंट करने से मन का दृष्टिकोण बदल जाता है और कुछ कथन नहीं किया जा सकता ॥ ३॥
नानक का कथन है कि यदि कोई जीव सतिगुरु से भेंट करके सांसारिक विषय-विकारों से तटस्थ होकर मर जाए और गुरु के शब्द द्वारा फिर जीवित हो जाए तो उसकी सांसारिक मोह-ममता की मैल दूर हो जाती है और उसका यह मन निर्मल हो जाता है ॥४॥१॥
