ਜਿਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ

English Translation

(Jis Jal Nidh Kaaran Tum Jag Aaye)

Sorath Mahala 1st. O, my mind! The nectar of True Name, like the pure water, for which we have come to this world, is available only, (with the Guru) through the Guru’s guidance. O, my mind! Let us forget about our cleverness and formal rituals, as this nectar of True Name cannot be attained with dual-mindedness. (1)

O, my mind! Let us stick to one path (of the True Lord) only, instead of wandering all around, as you will come to grief by seeking Him (the Lord) in the jungles (outside) as the nectar of True Name is present in full measure within your heart. (Pause)

O, my mind! Let us inculcate the virtues within, leaving aside vicious and bad qualities, otherwise, you will have to repent later due to our sinful actions (or vicious thoughts). O, my mind! You are getting stuck up m the mud of vicious and sinful actions without having any distinction between good and bad actions or realizing the opportune moments (for realizing Truth). (2)

O, my false mind! You are impure with the filth of greed whereas you are bathing at holy places, (to purify -your body) so what is the use of such visits? O, my mind! When you will recite the True Name through the Guru’s guidance, then you will wash away your dirt from inside and attain salvation. (3)

O, Nanak! One could attain salvation by casting away the vices like greed, falsehood, and slander and attaining Truth by following the Guru•s Word. We are singing the praises of the Lord through the Guru’s guidance. O, Lord! May You enable us to accept Your Will with pleasure so as to cross this ocean successfully. (4-9)

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ, (ਵੇਖੀਂ, ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਾਹ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰੀਂ। ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਢੂੰਢਣ ਤੁਰ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਏਂਗਾ। ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਤੁਸੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਏ ਹੋ ਉਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਛੱਡੋ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਭੀ ਛੱਡੋ (ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਧਰਮੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ, ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗਣ ਦੀ ਚਲਾਕੀ) ਇਸ ਦੋ-ਰੁਖ਼ੀ ਚਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।੧।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਔਗੁਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੋ। ਜੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ਪਏਗਾ। (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਤੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।੨।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਲੋਭ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਲੋਭ-ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਕਈ ਠੱਗੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਬਾਹਰ (ਤੀਰਥ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ? ਅੰਦਰਲੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਬਣੇਗੀ, ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋਗੇ।੩।

(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਲੋਭ ਛੱਡ, ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਤਿਆਗ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਫਲ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ।

ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਖ (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।੪।੯।

(Jis Jal Nidh Karan Tum Jag Aaye)

सोरठि महला १ ॥ जिस नामामृत रूपी निधि हेतु तुम इस दुनिया में आए हो, वह नामामृत गुरु के पास है। धार्मिक वेष का पाखण्ड एवं चतुराई को छोड़ दो, चूंकि दुविधा में ग्रस्त इन्सान को यह (अमृत) फल प्राप्त नहीं होता॥ १ ॥

हे मेरे मन ! तू स्थिर रह और इधर-उधर मत भटक। बाहर तलाश करने से बहुत दु:ख-कष्ट प्राप्त होते हैं, यह अमृत तो देहि रूपी घर में ही है॥ रहाउ ॥

अवगुण छोड़कर गुणों की तरफ दौड़ों अर्थात् गुण संग्रह करो, यदि अवगुणों में ही सक्रिय रहे तो बहुत पछताना पड़ेगा। तुम भले एवं बुरे के अन्तर को नहीं समझते और बार-बार पापों के कीचड़ में डूबते रहते हो॥ २ ॥

यदि मन में लोभ की मैल तथा बहुत सारा झूठ है तो बाहर स्नान करने का क्या अभिप्राय है ? गुरु के उपदेश द्वारा हमेशा ही निर्मल नाम का जाप करो, तभी तेरे अन्तर्मन का कल्याण होगा ॥ ३ ॥

लोभ, निन्दा एवं झूठ को निकाल कर त्याग दो, गुरु के वचन द्वारा ही सच्चा फल मिल जाएगा। हे हरि ! जैसे तुझे उपयुक्त लगता है, वैसे ही मेरी रक्षा करो, नानक तो शब्द द्वारा तेरी ही स्तुति करता है।॥४॥९॥
