Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the father of the Panth, Sri Kalgidhar, Dashmesh Pita, was born in Sri Harmandir Sahib, Patna, Bihar, on Poh Sudi 7 (23 Poh) Sammat 1723, on 22 December 1666, from the womb of Mata Gujri. At that time his father Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib was in Dhaka (East Bengal, Bangladesh). The Sahibzada was named Sri Gobind Rai Ji. The name Guru Gobind Singh was changed in 1699 after receiving Amrit from Panj Pyare.
Guru Ji’s parents hired Bhai Bajjar Singh to teach him how to wield weapons and how to ride a horse. Apart from military education, Guru Ji was also taught Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, etc., which are reflected in his Bani.
Establishment of Khalsa
1699 AD. A large gathering was held at Anandpur Sahib on the day of Baisakhi. The Guru demanded five heads in turn in the assembly. This demand was fulfilled by Bhai Daya Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji, Bhai Himmat Singh Ji, Bhai Mohkam Singh Ji, and Bhai Sahib Singh Ji.
The Guru first baptized them then he himself baptized them. After this, the words ‘Singh’ and ‘Kaur’ were added to everyone’s name. After being baptized, every Sikh was allowed to wear a hair, comb, bracelet, kirpan, and kachhehera and more than 20,000 people expressed their full faith by taking baptism from the Guru on this Baisakhi day.
