Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Joti Jot Diwas

Guru Hargobind Sahib Joti Jot Diwas is a significant day for Sikhs around the world. It marks the anniversary of the day when Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, left his physical body on Chet Sudi 5th, Bikram Samvat 1701. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is known as the “Master of Miri-Piri” because he emphasized the importance of both spiritual and temporal power. He was the first Sikh Guru to carry arms and trained his followers to defend themselves against oppression.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s teachings had a profound impact on Sikhism. He inspired the creation of the Sikh military tradition and the concept of the Sant-Sipahi, the saint-soldier. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s teachings emphasized the need for self-defense and the protection of human rights.

On Guru Hargobind Sahib Joti Jot Diwas, Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to remember the life and teachings of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. They recite hymns, sing kirtan, and share langar. The day is also an opportunity for Sikhs to reflect on the importance of standing up for justice and defending the rights of the oppressed.

Guru Hargobind Sahib was the only son of Guru Arjan Dev, who ascended the throne of Sikh Guruship on the martyrdom of his father when he was only 11 years old.

Guru Sahib built Akal Takht as the temporal seat of authority opposite the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He built a small fort, called Lohgarh and kept a small army (cavalry). He was the first Sikh Guru who ordained his Sikhs to bring offerings of weapons and horses.

ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਇਕਲੌਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸਨ, ਜੋ ਸਿਰਫ 11 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ‘ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਗੱਦੀ ਦੀ ਗੱਦੀ ‘ਤੇ ਬਿਰਾਜਮਾਨ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।

ਉਸਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਕੀਤਾ। ਆਪਜੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਲੋਹਗੜ੍ਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਫੌਜ (ਘੋੜਸਵਾਰ) ਰੱਖੀ। ਆਪਜੀ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਭੇਟਾਂ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਲਈ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
