Bandi Chhor Divas or Diwali celebrates Guru Hargobind’s release from the Gwalior Fort, with several innocent Hindu kings who were also imprisoned by Jahangir, on 26 October 1619. While Diwali is celebrated in Memories of Lord King Rama’s return to Ayodhya after 14 years long exile.

Bandi Chhor History
Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was known as Bandichhor because he released 52 prisoners from the fort of Gwalior. After release from prison, Guruji arrived in Amritsar on Diwali day. The Sikhs have been celebrating Diwali as Bandi Chhor Diwas since then. The day became known as “ Bandi Chhor Divas ‘ or ‘ The Day of Freedom’ and Guru Har Gobind was given the title ‘ Bandi Chhod ‘ or ‘ Deliverer from prison ‘.
ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦੀਛੋੜ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗਵਾਲੀਅਰ ਦੇ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 52 ਕੈਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਰਿਹਾਅ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਰਿਹਾਅ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ। ਸਿੱਖ ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨਾਉਂਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਦਿਨ “ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ” ਜਾਂ ‘ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ’ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ‘ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ’ ਜਾਂ ‘ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਡਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਦਾ ਖਿਤਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
