Brief History
Guru Hargobind, who succeeded his father, Arjan, as the sixth guru, wanted justice for his father’s death. He strengthened his army and initiated his followers into martial arts. Because he felt threatened by Guru Hargobind’s growing popularity, Jahangir imprisoned him in a fort where Jahangir had already locked up fifty-two other rajahs (princes) of independent kingdoms.
The Sikhs protested for more than a year, and on the advice of Mir Khan, an ally of the guru, the emperor agreed to free Guru Hargobind. But the guru insisted that the fifty-two princes be released as well. The emperor agreed on the condition that only those who could hold onto the guru’s cloak would be allowed to leave.
Guru Hargobind asked his followers to make a large cloak and had fifty-two tassels attached to it one for each prince. And so in 1619, Guru Hargobind walked out of the fort along with all the princes. He headed for Amritsar and arrived at the Golden Temple on the night of Diwali. The temple was lit to welcome Guru Hargobind just the way the kingdom of Ayodhya was lit to welcome Lord Rama.
And thus Diwali evolved with a Sikh identity and the event came to be known as Bandi Chhor Divas, or the Day the Prisoners Were Freed.
