The incarnation of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji took place at Nankana Sahib on Kartik Purnima in Samvat in 1526. The date of Birth is highly debatable, April 15th, 1469 approved by most of the historians. Despite being born in Vaisakh month, the tradition of celebrating Gupurab on Katak Poornmashi is yet to be broken.

Guru Nanak and Religion

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji was the son of mother Tripta Devi Ji and father Kalu Ram aka Kalyan Dass Khatri Ji. The visions of Satguruji’s greatness were visible from childhood itself. Nanak Dev Ji started the struggle against orthodoxy in his childhood when he was being followed by the ritual of wearing a janeu at the age of 11.

When Panditji asked him to wear the sacred thread known as Janeu around his neck in childhood, he stopped his hand and said – ‘Panditji, by wearing the thread, we are born in the second birth, which you call spiritual birth, then the thread should also be of some other kind. One that can bind the soul. The thread which you are giving me is of cotton, soon it will become dirty, break and burn in the pyre along with the body at the time of death. Then how did this thread happen for spiritual birth? This was Guru Nanak’s beginning of rejecting futile religious traditions.
