Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on April 15, 1469, in a village called Talwandi*. The tradition of Guru and disciple is very ancient in India. The place of Guru is considered higher than that of God. It is only through the Guru that a person gets worldly knowledge and through the Guru, he gets the knowledge of how to attain the Supreme Lord.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at a time when there was no centrally organized power in India. Foreign invaders were engaged in plundering the country of India. Superstitions and rituals were spread all around in the name of religion. At such a time, Guru Nanak proved to be a great philosopher and thinker of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev Ji won the hearts of the people with his sweet and simple speech.

*Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji should’ve been celebrated in the month of Vaisakh, but somehow it has been shifted to Kartik Puranmashi.
