Guru Nanak Sahib was the first Guru of the Sikhs. He is addressed by many names like Nanak, Nanak Dev Ji, Baba Nanak, and Nanakshah. He is also called Nanak Lama in Ladakh and Tibet. Nanak had in his personality the qualities of a philosopher, a mystic, a householder, a religious reformer, a social reformer, a poet, a patriot a Jagatguru, and a Vishwabandhu.

Guru Nanak Dev was born in Samvat 1526, Kartik (According to Traditions). Poornima was born in a village called Talwandi in Punjab. His father’s name was Kalu Chand and his mother’s name was Tripta Devi. Nowadays Talwandi is in Pakistan. His father sent Nanak to school to study, but his mind was towards detachment from childhood. They used to be absorbed in devotional service to the Lord and sage service.

The Amrit Vani of Guru Nanak Dev is compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib. Due to his compositions, he is also very famous among the saint poets of Hindi. He believed that the essence of all religions is the same. All religions teach sacrifice, service, and good conduct. No religion supports lies, hypocrisy, or superstitions.
