Guru Arjan Dev Ji was born on April 15, 1563, and he became the Guru of the Sikhs in 1581. He played a significant role in shaping Sikhism and is known for compiling the Adi Granth, the central religious scripture of Sikhism, and constructing the Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar, Punjab, India.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martyrdom occurred on May 30, 1606. He faced persecution and torture at the hands of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who considered Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s growing influence and the inclusiveness of Sikhism as a threat. Guru Arjan Dev Ji was subjected to extreme conditions, including being made to sit on a burning hot plate and having hot sand poured over his body. He endured these trials with grace and refused to convert to Islam.
On the occasion of Guru Arjan Dev Ji Shaheedi Gurpurab, Sikhs worldwide gather at gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to offer prayers, listen to religious discourses, and participate in kirtan (devotional singing). Langar, a community meal, is also organized to promote equality and seva (selfless service) among all individuals, irrespective of their social background.
