Broadly speaking, we can thus trace a twofold development in the evolution of Sikhism. On the one hand, Sikhism found it increasingly difficult to maintain the catholicity of its original ideals and the simplicity of its primitive form; on the other, the whole character of the movement changed as a peaceful sect was gradually turned into a military order and the devotee developed into the soldier-saint.
For a religion to maintain the simplest of forms and at the same time retain its popular character is, more or less, impossible and it is not difficult to see that, as it progressed, Sikhism was bound to react to its environment and evolve ideals of a more circumscribed and sectarian character with forms to correspond.
