Guru Nanak Dev ji used to sing kirtan with Rababi Bhai Mardana ji near Kathu Nangal during the third Udasi. The minds of the devotees were connected with kirtan. After the end of the kirtan, Guru Nanak Dev ji saw that a boy had brought a jug full of milk in front of him. When Guru Nanak Sahib saw the child, he said: "Garib-Niwaz! I have seen you. Please cut off the cycle of my birth and death."
Guru Nanak Sahib said: "You are still a child; where did this wisdom come from?"
The boy replied: "Guru Ji! One day my mother wanted to light the stove. The thick and big sticks would not catch fire, but when she lit the small sticks beneath them, they caught fire. A thought came into my mind that 'I am also a small stick, maybe death will come to me first instead of my elders?'"
And then one day this happened, oh Sache Patshah! The Mughals came to attack. They also reaped raw crops, also ripe, and semi-ripe (he meant they murdered people without looking at their age). It came to my mind that if no one has been able to stop these invaders, then how can one hold the hand of mighty death. Please remove the fear of death from me, and hence cut off my birth-death cycle.
Guru Nanak Dev ji smiled hearing this and said:
"You are not a child, you have the mind of an old man, you are 'Budhha'" If you will meditate on the true name of divine, then you will a long spiritual life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had such an impact on Buddha that he left home and joined him directly coming to Kartarpur from there.
